Proposal : New user option to not display any avatars.

I propose a new option to allow users to not display avatars.
This is a separate issue to allowing users to choose their avatar.
The reason for this option is to allow users who have dial-up to get a better response to a page.
I do think that as an alternative to avatars, each member type should have some associated colouring so a user can still get some visual cue as to who or what the message is from.
This should be detailed on the FAQ or About this site sort of page.

I thought we had agreed that no avatars would be used except for mods? Now I'm confused.

Huntress: Actually, this might be a non-subject. Depending on how the vote goes in the first poll.

Huntress, the proposal is not about who is allowed to HAVE avatars, but for the user to have the ability to not SEE avatars.
Whilst they are a great idea, and you can all see how popular my creation is (see Huntress's avatar), if you are on a slow connection, downloading them all is a pain as no matter how good the browser is it is still taking WAY to long to get them.
If I don't want to see them because I am on dial-up (I am at home), then allow me to disable them.
Allowing this feature will mean that the server will have less to feed. Maybe not much. It would be nice to know how many avatar links are handled in a day.

Ditto coral1,
I think this is a good idea, but if the vote on avatars turns out to
no avatars
, this one will be null.
As of now I think we should wait for the "no avatars" consultation to end.
May I suggest to hold this one, untill we are over with that one, meaning to close it, and reopen it after the voting week.

Yeah we can cancel, it if the other vote pases , but to answer the question about traffic for avatars; they represent about 2% of total bandwidth transfered which is a bit of a surprise, and much too high given the limited value they have.

OK. Temporaryly locking this one until the end of the vote (appox 10 days from today)
RQ: PM me if anything comes up.
Cd&: You might want to post that 2% figure in the other thread. If you haven't already. :)
