And as a side note:  I'm noticing that the drag in loading has more to do with the 3D buttons for all the individual posters (Website, AIM, Yahoo, etc...) than it is for the avatars.

Avatars will be more of a drag. Reason why is the same exact 3D button is used for all posts. So once one copy is downloaded it is cached int the browser. Thus 4-5 images requests for them only. So every page the user visits those images will not download again. Avatars on the other hand will not be the same, there will be so many different ones, so caching all of them sitewide will not happen and will just cause more and more requests. So should remove Avatars completely or make them strictly for mentors only.

Oh I have no doubt that the avatars are weighing it down but I have my browser set to a minimum cache and to check for new content everytime and I've been watching what takes the longest to load.  Each of those little buttons (gifs) are loaded for each individual because of the different links that are associated with them.

It has nothing to do with the links the images are linking to. Its has to do with the path to the images which are all the same, thats how caching works. If the SRC value is to the same file and it has already been downloaed it will not download again.

Ditto RQuadling, no sense of having a converstaion interrupted; and few witty/fun sigs don't justify it either.

I don't believe in god like I don't believe in Santa Claus, The Tooth Fairy, The Easter Bunny or Happy-Ever-After!

I agree with Richard. I don't like signatures at the end of the post because people have a tendency to use them for dumb stuff completely unrelated to the matter at hand. I would hate to entertain a discussion with a guy who tells me "I would poink your mom if she waznt so naughty fkn n00b lolol!!!111" after each interaction.

I also like the idea of keeping whatever off-topic content on the white-space at the left of the post. It makes perfect sense and uses the screen's realstate better.

I also want avatars much, much smaller - something like 30x30. Just a little almost unintelligible graphic to help associate the post with the member.
There is going to be enough going on with the site's layout to add to the visual confusion with loud avatars.

I don't see a need for signatures for all the arguments stated above against them. The commenter will always have a link to their profile, whch may be a place to put any additional info they may want to share.

One may want to append their name but IMO it is somewhat redundant. If desired, this can always be done manually.  If is anything other than the commenter's name it interupts the flow of discussion.

Not necessarily.  In my case the sig is very much a trade mark that is known across many sites.

Then we must have it!  :D

Perhaps we could make the field or however signatures are done limited.. so that one can have a simple signature that will not be more than X characters, or one line.
