If you are like me, you have YEARS of Firefox bookmarks that have been following you from one install to another.
Having just done a systen with W7 and a nice clean install of FF, I dreaded importing all that unneeded crud in.
I also dreaded having to rebuild all my currently used links from scratch.

I then noticed that FF lets you Export the bookmarks as a .HTML file.

I did that, and copied  it to the new system and put it somewhere easy to find.
I set up my bookmark folders the way I wanted them, then doubled clicked the .HTML file to open it in FF.
With it open, you can then right-click the links you really use and click bookmark, and put them where you want in the new install.
It took about 30 minutes to Export, copy, and set up most of my links that I currently use a lot.

I can add others as I need them, and after awhile probably nuke the .HTML file

Now I can get to my lightly used links without having to dig through tons of old unused (and possibly dead) links to find them.
Even an old packrat like me can like that.

For those of you that want to put W7 on an older system, but it is kind of stupid about boot DVDs, try this:

Put the hard drive into a system that does know how to boot from a DVD, and start the install there.
Let it go until the FIRST reboot.
Turn off the system and put the drive back into the old system, and boot it up.
It should finish the install.
If it complains or hangs, try rebooting.

I got W7 Beta on a Socket7 K6-2 350MHz with 384 MB ram this way.    : D

Still waiting for laptop drivers for Win 7.

Found some work around articles, but I'll probably stick with XP Pro until such time I am recovered from my cancer and can get a job, thus affording a new laptop.

In the meantime, and in anticipation of future employment, I have been cleaning up and reorganizing my web site.  Only 700 articles/tips to go, LOL.

What make/model do you have and what drivers are you missing?  32bit or 64 bit?  I finally sprang for a Satellite a few months back and I have it dual booting Win 7 and Kubuntu 9.10 with now problems.

Sheesh!  I must have been half asleep the last time I read this.  I'm sorry to hear about the cancer Rod.  Keep up the good spirits and I'm sending positive thoughts your way.  As for the job, I thought you and the wifey just opened a new restaurant?

well, never install windows any more. After the flop of Vista, "Seven" promisses are too late.

Just install a *Ubuntu, 64 bits preferably, and off you go. It'll even run your Win32 applications.

Don't make it sound like ubuntu will run ALL windows apps with no issues.  Ubuntu + wine will run *some* windows apps decently.

For me, that was the deal breaker.  I'll dual boot forever, I love ubuntu.  However I need VMWare vSphere client, I need Peachtree, I need Visual Studio 05/08 support. :)

Coral1, good tip on the FF export, I'm using it as we speak. :D

And wow, I need to frequent the forum here a little more often... yikes.

Using W7?
Tired of having to drill through umptine menus to get to a setting?

Try GODMODE

Make a New Folder and name it:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

One stop shopping for most all your tweaking needs.   {bseg}

For something a little more limited, try these "strings" instead: (don't ask me what they do, I haven't tried them yet)

Awesome!  That's the one thing that has always bugged me about Vista and 7.  Thanks Craig.

Just remember that it doesn't always work with Vista 64, for some reason.

Seems to be OK with W7 64, though

Good (and yes I read that) I'm running a dual boot on the lappy with W7-64 and Kubuntu 64 so that is perfect.  :-)
