.NET is an application development framework which includes ASP.NET for web sites.
ASP is a server side scripting language.
Some numbers for the ASP.NET folks, from the Netcraft server surveys, Dec 2005. IIS has 20% of the web servers. Of the web sites hosted on IIS, ASP accounts for 70-75% of those sites primary server side scripting language.
So, for all of the web sites hosted, ASP.NET can only account for 5% or less of all web sites. And I bet Microsoft made you believe it was important to learn .NET?
