Apache Server Configuration

Hello - I am new to PHP and MySql. I found the article from this site "Installing Apache 2.0 and PHP 5 (and MySql) on Windows XP. I used the instructions to install Apache 2.0.6.1, MySql 5.0 and PHP 5.2 Now I am having some trouble getting going. According to instructions I should see a MySql section on the phpinfo.php - such is not there. I picked up and tried to install Cake PHP and have it in the Apache htdocs folder but when I call it up I get a Cake home page which says "Your database configuration file is not present." I also purchased PHP Magic from Database Software.com. I built a database into an old website design and put it up on Godaddy.com and it works fine there. But I can't get the setup page to work on Apache on my local machine. I've searched the Internet I find a large number of different suggestions of what to configure etc. but so far it is not coming together. From what I can tell Apache Server is running and MySql is running but something is not right. Any help would be appreciated.

in PHP 5.2, mysql is no longer built-in, so you'll have to activate the module php_mysql
uncomment the "extension" line in php.ini
make sure you've only ONE php.ini file and it's reachable in the path.
pay also attention to the my.ini(or my.cnf) file : only one, and in the path. You can set the path of the my.ini file to use in various ways, including on the command line to launch mysqld, if you use such a solution.
personally, my php.ini just resides in the php install directory - d:/php where you'll also find the php5apache2.dll file - and my APache2 find it via this line in httpd.conf :
# configure the path to php.ini
PHPIniDir d:/php
easy, isn't it ?

I tried all you said and it didn't do it. I did notice that Apache is listening on Port 80 while MySql is listening on Port 3306. I don't know if that means anything.

I've been fighting this struggle for so long now. I found out about XAAMP Distribution and tried it. I was up and running in 4 minutes and everything was working properly. More power to those who can configure their own. I just wanted to get on to learning PHP.

Apache and PHP is a good reason to move to linux or BSD...
In many distributions installing Apache/PHP/MySQL only requires a few mouse clicks.
You also have the advantage of the automatic updates.
Not to mention that PHP works better on *NIX systems.
