Sound problem after wiping Vista, and installing XP

With a lot of people are wiping Vista off their new systems, and moving XP into it (either by cloning or putting in the old hard drive) there seems to be a problem getting the Sound and/or Modem drivers to install after doing the Repair
I found this in Maximum PC - November 2007 - the Watchdog section
The problem is with the High Definition Audio Bus package in XP. The patch needs to be installed before the sound driver (includes modem problems also).
On Microsoft's Knowledge Base, look for KB888111 for more info.
There does not seem to be a direct link to the patch. You have to hunt for the XP SP2 version of the file.
Once the patch is installed, it will bring up the Audio Device On High Definition Audio Bus, and the Modem Device On High Definition Audio Bus, in the Device Manager where you can install the needed drivers.
It also mentions that some people have had luck by using the Reference Drivers from the sound chip makers site.

I wonder if that also applies to the "3rd party" patch/hotfix collections you can DL and burn to disk?
