Problem with Apache and IE7 crashing causing Dr Watson errors

I'm trying to install Apache following a need to reinstall Windows XP and consequently everything else. Previously I had Apache 1.3.31 installed and it was working fine but I am taking this opportunity to upgrade to Apache 2. Initially I installed 2.2.4 but had the problems I'm about to describe but then I found the excellent instructions on ERT by NicholasSolutions. I noted that it suggested that there might be a problem with version 2.2 and PHP 5 (which will be the next thing on my list to install) so I downloaded apache_2.0.59-win32-x86-no_ssl.msi and restored Windows back to before the 2.2.4 install.

With Apache 2.0.59 I went through the install as before but this time selected "only for current user on Port 8080 ..." whereas before I had selected the "all users on port 80" option. But on completion I had pretty much the same problems as before.

When using Firefox everything seems fine and working correctly but if I try to use Internet Explorer 7 it will crash when Apache is running and bring everything to a halt. With Apache 2.2.4 the crash would be immediately I started IE7 but with Apache 2.0.59 at least IE7 would start but it would crash as soon as I try to access localhost:8080. My PC would then be unusable for anything and the only recourse would be a restart. Even that incurred a mass of "Dr Watson would not end errors" and I'd either have to switch off my PC manually or keep clicking "End Now" something like a hundred or more times before the errors eventually cleared to allow a clean shut-down.

OK I could avoid using IE7 when running Apache but when I build websites I want to be able to test them with IE. Anyone got any idea what is going wrong here. I haven't even started on installing PHP and MySQL yet.

what's wrong on your PC is Internet Expldoer 7 (gamma-level software)

if it works with Firefox, it'll work with all normal browsers, including IE 6
